The Fifth & Detroit project began with extensive engagement with stakeholders in the Kerrytown District neighborhood in addition to a pilot study testing proposed changes to road configuration. This neighborhood is home to small businesses, both retail and professional, a robust weekly Farmer’s Market, residents, and a public high school. The established project goals focused on safety, function, and design.

Fifth Street pre renovation

Fifth Ave. pre-construction

Completed over two construction seasons, 2018 & 2019, work included full road reconstruction of Fifth and Detroit from Catherine to Kingsley, underground utility upgrades and replacement, crosswalk improvements and reconfiguration, installation of a pedestrian crossing island, historic brick restoration, lighting improvements, sidewalk replacement, rain gardens, street trees, and two pedestrian plazas. The project also included resurfacing on Fifth Ave. north of Kingsley and south of Catherine.
