State Street Project

State Street Project

State Street Drawing

State Street is one of the most diverse downtown streets, bordering the University of Michigan’s central campus, it is the quintessential intersection of town and gown. This project will:

  • Improve safety, accessibility, and ease of navigation for all users
  • Prioritize pedestrians given the high volume of pedestrian activity
  • Enhance street lighting
  • Accommodate bus and service truck access
  • Support special events and street closures
  • Reflect State Street’s distinct character and context
  • Improve drainage and better manage stormwater
  • Create more space for business activities
  • Provide more flexible curbside zones
  • Repair critical infrastructure and utilities
  • Complete the bikeway link from William Street to North University

This project is being done in coordination and collaboration with Phase 1 of a critical City of Ann Arbor water main replacement project. The project limits are State Street between William and Huron. Construction will take place over two seasons:

June – Labor Day 2022: Full reconstruction of the street, streetscape, and intersections with curbless design from William to just north of North University. Water main replacement from William to Liberty.

February 27, 2023 – Labor Day 2023: Full reconstruction with curbless design and streetscape from North University to Washington and street resurfacing from Washington to Huron.

State Street, between William and Washington, will be home to Ann Arbor’s first curbless street. Curbless streets provide maximum flexibility of the curbside and accessibility to the sidewalk for all people. Planned safety improvements include:

  • Audible pedestrian signals
  • All walk pedestrian signal phases at Liberty, William, & North University
  • Removal of second northbound travel lane between William & Liberty
  • Raised intersections
  • Separated bikeway / shared use path from William to North University
