LIBERTY PLAZA MURAL

“My goal is to introduce a sense of tranquility to the plaza through a bright, organized design that balances vibrancy with serenity.”

– Christian Stanley

ABOUT:

Starting on Monday, August 11, mural installations will take place in Liberty Plaza, with an anticipated completion date near early September. This mural is the second in a series of public art installations planned by the DDA’s Elevate program. This marks the first permanent installation of public art, following the interactive art exhibit Oscillation, which was hosted in Liberty Plaza from January to March.

C. Stanley Creative has been selected to design and paint the three-tiered plaza. Stanley’s vision for the Liberty Plaza mural incorporates geometric shapes that flow horizontally to fill the unique wall spaces of the plaza, creating a clean, modern look. The design brings a unifying theme to the various levels and pockets of the plaza.

The City of Ann Arbor Parks and Recreation Department and the Ann Arbor Downtown Development Authority’s Elevate Program collaborated to fund the installation. The Ann Arbor Art Center has been a key partner and collaborator with the artist, the DDA, and the Parks department to oversee artist selection, design review, and scheduling of mural installations.

Christian Stanley is a professional muralist based in Orlando, Florida. His large-scale murals appear across the United States and abroad, often focusing on native species and environmental themes.

Christian’s street art work is known for its signature “dash and dot” style, which borders on impressionism to give his subjects depth and vibrant color. He has had the privilege of working with large national brands and local community arts organizations alike.

In his studio, Christian’s work often calls back to the flora and fauna of home, with occasional fantasy or surreal themes. His process involves concepting, digital illustration, and painting with the use of custom made stencils, spray paint, and acrylic paint.

In 2024, Stanley received a Gold National Mural Award for his mural Prairie Thunder and was recognized by Street Art Cities as one of the top muralists in the world.

Oscillation is the debut project from the Ann Arbor DDA’s Elevate Program.

Elevate aims to fund public art and placemaking installations that enhance the downtown experience for all people.

The Public Art Commission advises on materials, construction, and other items. The DDA determines project focus, location, and oversees installation and maintenance. The City approves installation.
