Downtown Wayfinding Project

Project History:

Beginning in 2006 the DDA began work developing a plan to install a comprehensive wayfinding sign system to assist visitors and community newcomers to downtown destinations. Corbin Design Company was hired to lead the project, and a Project Advisory Committee was assembled to provide direction, including representatives of the Ann Arbor Convention & Visitors Bureau, University of Michigan, DDA, and community.

Several meetings with the public were held to elicit feedback on the sign design concept. A number of Ann Arbor design professionals also volunteered a great deal of time to assist the project, including holding a half day charrette and design contest to tease out important design considerations for the project. This input was used to develop the final sign design. Input from a variety of sources was also used to determine the list of downtown destinations to be included on the signs.
The approved downtown wayfinding system consists of a “family of signs” including those at a vehicular scale, pedestrian scale, and maps with a ‘You Are Here’ orientation. Downtown’s four districts are distinguished by the use of color and name. To ensure longevity, the signs were designed to be sturdy and modular in nature so individual destinations can be installed or replaced as needed without replacing the entire sign.

In May 2009, the DDA Board selected Fairmont Sign Company to fabricate and install the signs and in 2010 the full installation was complete.
